I am alone with my dominating ideal. It is the ideal that sustains me when I am exhausted, that pushes me forward, that dries my secret tears with its inextinguishable fire, and that makes me overcome loneliness, sadness, poverty, slander, rivalry, the disdain and disregard of my people, and the rancor and insults of our enemies. The ideal is my homeland, my family, my new wife; my only friend, aide, and refuge; my faith, hope, love, and strength. It shows me my duty in Puerto Rico and my incentive in Cuba; it reveals to me the great nation of the future in all Latin America; it gives principle to the self-oblivion, self-denial, and self-sacrifice; it has replaced beliefs learned by rote with this religion of duty and the American nation; it has replaced the easy renown of Literature and the depraved triumphs of the politics of favoritism with indifference toward the glory of talent and a vehement hostility toward the triumph of miserable passions; it is the ideal that loves me as I am, as my fellow men do not love • Poets from various Chicago neighborhoods harness the power of plena, a traditional Puerto Rican musical form, as a historical tool of protest.
