Carole satyamurti biography

I'm torn between three and four stars for this book. It contained some pieces that I really liked for their intelligence and wit, but there was little that I adored. I also suspect that I am missing some potentially very relevant background information that comes of this being the work of a then approximately fifty year old British woman in 1990. I know that the United Kingdom had some economic and social upheavals during the time that Satyamurti would have been writing, but having little understanding of those, I don't know whether or not the poems are actually marked in those ways. They do seem to be marked by a sense of uncertainty and scarcity, but they also possess an awareness of themselves as tales and as sources of awareness of the circumstances they describe. As such, in some ways, the poems are very spare and in others rather abundant. I think "On Not Being a Nature Poet" marks this especially well:

Picking up a small white feather
I note its symmetry, each tiny rib
knowing its proper measure.

I hold it in my palm, and speculate
how many I would have to balance there
before I'd feel the weight.

I see its consummate design, spare
curve like a careful hand, repelling water,
nurturing warm air.

Carole Satyamurti

Carole Satyamurti is a poet and sociologist. She grew up in Kent, and has lived in North America, Singapore and Uganda. She published three volumes of poetry with Oxford University Press, of which the first and third were Poetry Book Society Recommendations: Broken Moon (1987), Changing the Subject (1990) and Striking Distance (1994). In 1998, OUP published her Selected Poems. Following the termination of the OUP poetry list, her fourth collection, Love and Variations, was published by Bloodaxe in 2000. Stitching the Dark: New and Selected Poems appeared from Bloodaxe in 2005, and a new collection, Countdown, in 2011.

As a sociologist, she taught at the University of East London, and at the Tavistock Clinic, where her main academic interest was in the application of psychoanalytic ideas to an understanding of social processes, and to the stories people tell about themselves. She contributed to, and co-edited, with Hamish Canham, a collection of essays on the connections between poetry and psychoanalysis, Acquainted With the Night: psychoanalysis and the poetic imagination (Karnac, 2003).
